Cavalier Cailbre to appear at VXR Power Festival at Silverstone

Kevin Bricknall's Vauxhall Cavalier Calibre will be making an appearance on both days of the VXR Power Festival at Silverstone on 28th & 29th August. More details on the event can be found on this link - www.vxrpowerevents.co.uk

ANTIFREEZE

The following report is posted on the Cavalier & Chevette Club website courtesy of the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs, in whose journal this report first appeared.  Club members are advised to read and take note before  replacing the coolant in their Club cars for the winter season.

 Technology moves forward and new products are constantly being launched with claims to improved formulations and performance. With the recent bitterly cold weather in January antifreeze has been in the headlines, with some alarming stories which at first seem to be about the well-known tendency of antifreeze to find the tiniest hole and cause leakages – but in these cases it has led to catastrophic engine problems.

 Traditional blue ethylene glycol is a toxic but highly effective antifreeze and contains silicates as an inhibitor to help prevent corrosion in an engine with mixed metals in its make-up. Bluecol and Blue Star are well known brand names and both of these are declared suitable for ‘classic cars’ on their company websites. Be aware that there are also low- or no-silicate ethylene glycol formulations (usually red) available which may not be suitable for all engines.

 Propylene glycol is another well-known and less toxic antifreeze formula and usually contains silicates but Comma, the main manufacturer, have now discontinued it in favour of an ethylene glycol product containing ‘bittering agents’ to make it less palatable and minimise the risk of accidental poisoning.

 Both of the above products use inorganic additive technology (IAT). Recently problems have been reported concerning the use of antifreeze mixtures using organic acid technology (OAT). OAT was introduced in the mid-1990s and the products are biodegradable, recyclable and do not contain either silicates or phosphates and are designed to be longer lasting. However these products do seem to cause problems in older engines; over and above the ability of antifreeze to find the smallest crevice and leak, OAT antifreezes have been accused of destroying seals and gaskets and causing a great deal of damage in ‘old’ engines. For this reason the manufacturers do not recommend their use in historic vehicles. These products are usually coloured red, pink or orange.

 The final category is HOAT. These products use hybrid organic acid technology in an ethylene glycol base with some silicates in the formulation alongside the organic corrosion inhibitors. The product is usually coloured green and are not recommended for use in historic vehicles.

 The Federation are still researching this problem but our advice at the moment is:

Only use blue coloured IAT antifreeze in historic vehicles;

Only use OAT products (‘advanced’ or ‘long life’ antifreeze) if the vehicle used it when new and if specifically directed by the vehicle’s manufacturer;

Never mix different types of antifreeze without thoroughly flushing out the system;

Always replace the coolant within the time scale specified by the antifreeze manufacturer as the corrosion inhibitors break down over time.

Vauxhall Cavalier Mk2 Convertible Buyers Guide in Classic Car Weekly

Mal Docherty and Kevin Bricknall have helped put together a Buyers Guide for Classic Weekly on the Cavalier Mk2 Convertible.   This is out Wednesday 30th June 2010.

Found in a Lake

Below are some pictures of a Vauxhall Cavalier Mk1 which was discovered in the Blue Lagoon in Rivington, Bolton in July 2009.  The lake had to be drained for Health and Safety reasons and when they started draining it, they found this Mk1 Cavalier at the bottom.  How it got there or how long it had been there is anyone's guess, but the picture's are very interesting just the same.

The Ashes to Ashes Mk2 Cavalier, The Calibre, The Stig and Star Wars!!

Below are some shots of my Mk2 Cavalier Calibre with the Cavalier 1300 L Saloon from Ashes to Ashes at Collectomania in Milton Keynes.  Also managed to get The Stig and some Star Wars characters to stand with the cars.  I also spoke to Dean Andrews (AKA Ray Carling) from Ashes to Ashes and as well as him signing my Cavalier Calibre brochure and my normal range brochure, he also informed me that he worked at a Vauxhall dealer called  Kirkby Central in Wellgate, Rotherham, from 1979 for about three years when the Mk1 Cavalier was in production.  He also stood for picture's with the car that featured in the final episode.

Is he the most famous person to work for Vauxhall?

Thanks must go to Anni Ruecroft and every one there from biggest fan group for Ashes to Ashes  www.luigis.org.uk

Spring White Griffin Run 9th May 2010 Show Report

This year’s Griffin Run was blessed with warm sunny weather and excellent visibility, all the better to enjoy one of the most scenic trips in the area.

The run left from the Castle Hotel, Ruthin, and made a big circle round and through the relatively little-visited Hiraethog district of central North Wales.  Nine cars took part; 2 x Cavalier Mk. 1, 2  x Chevettes, 1 x  Ascona “B”, 1 x Cavalier Mk 2, 1 x Cavalier Mk 3, 1 x daily driver Rover 800 series, and a most welcome guest from our joint venture with the CSMACVG in the shape of an immaculate black Opel Monza.

We ran through the northern fringes of the Clocaenog Forest on unclassified roads until we hit the “B” road north past Llyn Brenig, then turned west onto the Denbigh Moors past the lonely Sportsman’s Arms (highest pub in Wales).  Stopping near Llyn Aled, we drew the convoy up in a big layby so that everyone could enjoy the views across to the big peaks of Snowdonia to the west.  Picking up the route again, we wound down across the moors – always with the mountains on the horizon – to Pentrefoelas, where we had a splendid lunch at Y Giler Arms, a pleasant reminder of the first-ever White Griffin Run lunch in the same pub.  This year’s trip was the 20th Griffin Run!

After lunch, we turned south into the steep hills between the A5 and the Trweryn watershed, and tried our hands at the mountain roads for a few miles.  Dropping down suddenly to Cerrig-y-Drudion, we expected a straight run back to Ruthin along the forest road, but there was one more surprise to the day.  We were led off into the Clocaenog Forest once more through some of the prettiest lanes and clearings.  One more stop let us share a short stroll in the forest to stretch our legs before rejoining the forest road to Ruthin, with its fine outlook across the Llantysilio Hills to the south and the Clwydian range to the east.

The party broke up most reluctantly after a welcome tea and coffee break at the Castle Hotel, where commemorative certificates of the run were issued.  A superb run, for which all who took part were appreciative of the efforts of our hosts, Bryan and Marie Wilcox.  Many thanks to them for making the 20th run such a memorable one.  Griffin Runners came from as far away as East and West Yorkshire and even on a long weekend break from Hertfordshire to enjoy one of the Club’s big social events of the year.

Photos of the day courtesy of Paul Ellson.  Car park shot shows the Runners lined up in Ruthin at the start of the day; all forest shots are in different areas of the Clocaenog forest, and the shots with moorland background are looking north across the Denbigh Moors.

COULD YOUR BELOVED CLASSIC BE THE CLASSIC CAR OF THE YEAR.

Let's go for it and blitz them with all our beltin' Cavs and Chevettes!  What have we got to lose?

Classic Car owners across the UK are being invited to entre their pride and joy in a nationwide competition to find the Classic Car of the Year.  The competition, organised by Classic Car Weekly, Classic Cars and Practical Classics Magazines, offers a fantastic first prize valued at over £3,500 with over £700 worth of runners up prizes up for grabs.

The competition, in association with Lancaster Insurance, has six defined categories – Pre-war, Forties, Fifties, Sixties, Seventies and Eighties. There are no restrictions on the number of cars owners can enter – if they are lucky enough to own more than one classic car, then all the vehicles can be included.

An expert judging panel will evaluate the entrants on their individual merits including any mammoth restorations, its fascinating history and how often it is used. From this information and imagery provided, the panel will then shortlist ten cars from each category and invite the public to vote for their favorite.

It will be the public who decide the winner and the runners up of each category. The winning cars will then go on display at the Classic Motor Show at Birmingham’s NEC from 12th to 14th November where the overall winner with the most votes will be revealed and the grand prize awarded.

The eventual winner of the title will receive a unique trophy designed by Silvebronz as well as a mountain of prizes including a year’s free comprehensive car insurance up to a value of £300 from Lancaster Insurance, weekend tickets to the Classic Motor Show and hotel accommodation. They will also receive a Caracalla Bagaglio bag, a Dakota jacket, a hamper of Farecla cleaning products, a specialised car cover, a TX watch, a Karcher pressure washer and a Teng Tools toolbox and tools worth over £1,000.

Opel Ascona 400 and Vauxhall Chevette HS/HSR on show at Autosport International 2010

I visited Autosport International hoping to see Walter Rohrl’s Opel Ascona 400 as I was lead to believe it was going to be on show; however visiting the stand it should have been on it was not there and a Lancia 037 was there instead! However wandering around the show i came across The Roger Albert Clark Rally stand (www.rogeralbertclarkrally.org) which had this Ascona 400 and Chevette HS/HSR on show. From what i understand from chatting to the people on the stand both cars are owned by their drivers and compete on various other rally's as well as this one.
